The Faculty of Languages and Communication (FBK) conducted A Weekend in English (AWIE) programme in September and October 2016 at UniSZA campus in Gong Badak. This programme was held in collaboration with The Centre for Industry and Community Network (PJIM) and was funded by NBOS4. In total, 80 Form 2 students of SMK Kompleks Gong Badak and SMK Kompleks Seberang Takir participated in the programme that had the objectives of stimulating their interest in the English language and providing them opportunities to communicate in the English language through fun-learning activities, games and competitions. The programme was facilitated by twenty five specially trained students of Bachelor of English with Communication of UniSZA.

In the first session, held on 30 September 2016, the activities carried out were Ice Breaking (Blank Space), Twist Your Tongue! and Chant Your Bond . The second session was held on 14 October 2016 and incorporated activities such as Serpente e Scaletta (Snake Ladder), Hot Seats and English Lounge. The grand finale of the programme, on 21 October 2016, in conjunction with the closing ceremony, saw the participants take part in two competitions: Choral Speaking and Western Dikir. The closing ceremony was officiated by the Vice Chancellor of UniSZA, Prof. Dato' Ahmad Zubaidi Abdul Latif who also gave away the prizes to the winners of the competitions. Among the attendees of the Closing ceremony were the Dean of FBK, Prof Dato' Mohamad Anwar Omar Din, staff of FBK, representatives from PJIM and the principals and teachers of the two schools involved.

Overall, the feedback gathered from both the participants of the programme and the schools involved was encouraging. They were generally satisfied with the nature of the activities, the role of the facilitators, the time alloted for each session and the choice of venue. It is hoped that a beneficial programme of this nature would continue in the future, albeit on a bigger scale.
